CREATIVE BRIEF
Global Day, a worldwide day of Jewish education, was created in 2010 to celebrate the completion of 40 years’ work by Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz in translating the Talmud. This ambitious event is driven by a desire to recognize Rabbi Steinsaltz’s monumental accomplishment in translating the Talmud, and seeks to bring together Jews across the spectrum of beliefs and backgrounds for a day of study and unity. We need a graphic mark that must be adaptable and display five different languages, while maintaining uniformity as a set. It must communicate Jewish unity, coming together and worldwide participation. The mark should have a contemporary, celebratory and exciting sensibility.

DESIGN RESPONSE
The circle was our starting point. It’s a universal shape that represents the globe, continuity, completion, inner vision, higher knowledge and unity. The central graphic is a shining star (Magen David) that echoes this theme. The rays of light extend outward in a gesture of openness while at the same time, the pattern draws the viewer inward, inviting participation. We wrapped the multi-lingual titles around the circle using a unified color and type treatment. Regardless of the language displayed, the graphic mark remains constant.

FIVE-YEAR MARK
On November 16, 2014, exactly five months from today, the Global Day of Jewish Learning will celebrate its fifth anniversary! Since the inaugural launch in 2010, this inclusive initiative has grown to involve more than 400 communities—from Albuquerque to Makati—in nearly 40 countries worldwide.

Monday Marks: Every Monday, for twenty-one consecutive weeks, we’ll be blogging about a graphic mark designed by our creative team. We’ll reveal the meaning and inspiration and share the many questions that each mark seeks to answer. The series begins on our 21st birthday, May 19, 2014. BookMARK our blog and see how we have made our mark!
