In 2021, Twisted Fest Tulsa emerged as a new Tulsa-based arts non-profit. Its plan: to create a world-class film festival showcasing the work of filmmakers from the region and beyond. In year two, the vision grew to incorporate year-round programming with a more expansive artistic focus including visual art, comedy, drag, music, dance, and more. They needed a strong brand.
Before developing the visual identity, MGD suggested “Twisted Arts” as a more expansive name. “Twisted” relates to the unconventional character of the artists and their work. “Arts” is an umbrella term to better encapsulate the organization’s growing ambitions.
The wordmark includes a warped “W,” which is also used to form the tornado icon. The edgy symbol is affectionately called “Twisty” and references both the Tulsa region (situated in Tornado Alley) and the queer nature of the organization.
In addition to marketing the flagship film festival each fall, Twisted Arts debuts new events and programs each year. MGD partners with them to create their unique sub-brands. Mini-festivals have emerged, such as the Native art–based “2-Spirit Fest” as well as the “Pride Kickoff” event.
